SMALL POX WILL GET YOU!!!
The use of small pox as an agent of war, i have to admit, was one smart move. Mean, but smart. During the French-Indian war we used smallpox ridden blankets to warm the bodies of our enemies in the hopes that they would, and did, contract the smallpox virus. Though this was quite an appalling method to attack the foe before us it did have the desired affect. A complete annihilation of an enemy so that one can claim victory without losing any men is the way people win wars apparently. The fact that Russia had a few metric tons of small pox pointed at the US was a little shocking to hear about. During the Cold War this sort of thing would have been looked at as a direct threat and I believe that though smallpox is a frightening thing to imagine resurfacing I feel that a nuke pointed at Russia did the trick to cancel it out considering we do have a cure to smallpox. Public health is related to Bio-Terrorism because the act of terrorism will effect the entire population of any nation and needs to be a public matter of interest. I feel that we should not be worried about a resurgence of smallpox as it has been eradicated and our ties with Russia are strong enough to prevent a war. I feel that the herd immunity effect has left the majority of the population of the US vulnerable to easily preventable diseases and illnesses for instance the out-break of whooping cough in Oregon.
That's all I have to say about that.

its crazy to think that disease can be used as a weapon. lets just hope terrorists don't reach for other diseases that spread like smallpox. it's scary to know that russia had a plan to use it on us.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea there was/is a whooping cough outbreak in Oregon (which reminds me of that Oregon Trail computer game you play in elementary school--but that's another story...). It's surprising how a disease from so long ago is coming back to haunt us now. I do agree that we shouldn't have to worry much about smallpox, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared for other possible disease epidemics (not just the ones used in bioterrorism).
ReplyDeleteDon't you think that Russia's plan was a little stupid though? I mean unless ALL of Russia had been vaccinated aren't they just as likely for getting smallpox as any other country. Sure it would wipe out tons of people but it could also very well wipe out Russia as well. The whole bioterrorism yes is a very ingenious method of attack but I also think it is very risky which is why we haven't seen too much of it in the past. You want to know what is even scarier than smallpx bioterrorism...botulism. All it take is a tablesoop of botulism in a water system and it can wipe out an entire city. Now that is something you really have to look out for.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is shocking to find out that Russia had 'a few metric tons' of smallpox that they could launch at us in an ICBM. But you're probably right that we don't to worry about it. It seems like the same situation of Mutually Assured Destruction during the cold war - even if they were to launch said ICBM full of smallpox, I'm sure we would be able to launch some other biochemical agent or nuke right back at them. However, I personally hope that it never comes down to this. After all, just as Kaitlyn mentions, what if smallpox were to spread throughout the world and we had a pandemic on our hands? It's not as if Russia also has a few metric tons of the smallpox vaccine ready to go as well...
ReplyDeleteThanks to this great herbal doctor who cured my friend of HIV/aids, his name is Dr. Iyabiye. My friend suffered HIV for so long that she lost her job and became stranded financially because of HIV antiretroviral drugs she buys every time. Until 2 months ago when I heard about this doctor and I did contacted him to help my friend, he administered his medication on her and she was confirmed cured and free at the hospital after the treatment. I came here to inform the general public and to safe people from this life threatening & killing disease. Contact: iyabiyehealinghome@gmail.com (+2348072229413 / +2348158577300)
